South Bay Vocational Center is a nonprofit in Carson whose roots go back to a schoolhouse program in 1952, and whose mission is vocational training, counseling, advocacy and opportunity for individuals with disabilities. Its Community Integrated Adult Day Program follows a person-centered philosophy, pairing on-site classes with community outings and work experience. Participants can work at integrated work sites, including the center's packaging operation and car cleaning service, earning at least minimum wage. The center also offers community employment services with job coaching. It is licensed by the California Department of Social Services as an Adult Day Program for up to 32 participants.
Services & Care
The center's program brochure describes arts and crafts, cooking classes, an entertainment class with music, dance and video game therapy, computer skills, and community outings to parks, aquariums, beaches, museums and sporting events. A day camping program (with transport in the center's RV) builds social skills and independence. Paid work experience is available in packaging, product assembly, inventory and car cleaning, and job coaching supports community employment.
