Pursuit Learning Academy at Pursuit Center

Pursuit Learning Academy is the adult day program of Pursuit Center, a Houston nonprofit for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), on its campus on Harrisburg Boulevard. It is a licensed Individualized Skills and Socialization program offering classes, specialty clubs and community outings, with personalized learning plans for each person. Its Young at Heart group gives participants 55 and older an age-appropriate schedule with more outings. Pursuit Center also runs residences, employment services and an on-site health and wellness clinic. Reviewers describe a new, modern campus and say their sons enjoy attending; some reviewers say the admissions process and communication can be slow, and one noted a big difference in activity levels between the two day-program floors.

Participants follow personalized learning plans with life skills training (including cooking and kitchen safety), self-advocacy, technology and computer skills, creative arts and social skills groups. Specialty clubs cover arts and crafts, cooking and technology, and mini lessons teach money management, personal safety and civic engagement. Community outings to museums, parks, restaurants and grocery stores use transportation provided through a partnership with METRO, and Bloom Fitness runs adaptive exercise in the program.

Pursuit Center is at 4400 Harrisburg Blvd, Houston, TX 77011, and is open Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The adult day program runs on weekdays, and Camp Pursuit offers Saturday activities. One reviewer reports that the program is Medicaid funded but that a non-refundable administrative fee was charged at intake, so ask about costs.
