Irene Wortham Center Adult Day Activity Program

The Adult Day Activity (ADA) Program is run by Irene Wortham Center, an Asheville nonprofit that has served children and adults with disabilities since 1961. The program gives adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities a familiar, flexible environment, and each participant follows an individualized service plan with goals around communication, relaxation and self-expression. It is accredited by CARF and housed in an open-concept 7,000-square-foot building opened in 2011. Online reviews of the center mostly concern its early learning program rather than the adult program. It is certified by North Carolina as an Adult Day Care program serving adults with developmental disabilities, for up to 75 participants.

Skilled staff provide medication, treatments and exercise as prescribed. Specialized dietary needs are met through adapted equipment, utensils, food or liquid consistency, assistance and monitoring. Direct-care staff are certified in medication administration, first aid, CPR and behavior management, and all levels of incontinence care are provided.

The program is at 916 W Chapel Rd, Asheville, NC 28803, and is open Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. It serves adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
