The Lighthouse of Houston Adult Day Program

The Adult Day Program is run by The Lighthouse of Houston, a nonprofit that has served people who are blind or have low vision for 85 years. The program is for adults who are blind, have low vision or have other disabilities and also have a medical need, and it focuses on giving participants a safe, social place to connect and build lasting friendships. Every activity is designed for people who are blind or have low vision. The program is licensed by Texas Health and Human Services as a Day Activity and Health Services (DAHS) facility for up to 60 participants, and it sits on the Lighthouse campus, which also offers a low vision clinic, counseling, and technology and job training.

Each participant receives an on-site health assessment and a personalized care plan monitored by the program's registered nurse. Daily activities include exercise, games, arts and crafts, cooking classes, swimming and field trips, all adapted for people who are blind or have low vision. A hot lunch and a snack are included every day. Participants can also make use of other Lighthouse services, such as the low vision clinic, counseling and support groups, and orientation and mobility training.

The program is at 3602 W Dallas St, Houston, TX 77019, and runs Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., except holidays. The cost is $33 per day, paid privately, covered by Medicaid, or through the Veterans Administration. To join, a person needs a health condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes, a health assessment by the program's registered nurse, and physician orders, and must be Medicaid eligible.
