NIAD (Nurturing Independence through Artistic Development) is a progressive art studio in Richmond for adult artists with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Artists work in the studio, show their art in NIAD's main gallery and other exhibitions, and earn income when their work sells. Community programs include field trips to museums and exhibitions around the Bay Area. Visitors and volunteers describe a joyful studio, though one former artist describes confusing payouts and hard-to-reach staff. It is licensed by the California Department of Social Services as an Adult Day Program for up to 80 participants.
Services & Care
NIAD artists work in a range of media in the studios with facilitators, and their work is exhibited in NIAD's gallery and sold through its store. The program includes field trips, such as visits to the Oakland Museum of California and other exhibitions. Volunteers also take part in studio activities and events.
