Becoming Independent (BI) is a Sonoma County nonprofit that has supported adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the North Bay since 1967. Its Santa Rosa site offers day programming built around three areas: education, employment and living services, with classes tailored to each person's interests and goals. Programs cover health and wellness, self-advocacy, social and communication skills, volunteering, art and music, and vocational training. Families describe caring, considerate staff, and one reviewer notes her sister has attended since the program first opened. It is licensed by the California Department of Social Services as an Adult Day Program for up to 285 participants.
Services & Care
BI's education programs, offered in person or virtually, include health and wellness (cooking, nutrition and healthy habits), self-advocacy and personal growth, social and communication skills classes, volunteer work with local nonprofits, and art and music, including a Professional Arts program. Vocational services build job skills toward competitive employment, and Tailored Day Services offer one-on-one support for exploring work, volunteer or education goals. Living services help people work toward the level of independence they want at home.
