ICAN California Abilities Network – Torrance

ICAN (California Abilities Network) is a nonprofit serving Southern California adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Its renovated Torrance site on Sepulveda Boulevard hosts the Partial Work Program, a day program combining employment-skills training and work opportunities with social development, healthy living and community integration, along with Supported Employment and the ICAN Garden. Clients help build their own schedules from seasonal clubs, and the program reports a 1:3 staff-to-client ratio. Participants describe kind staff and enjoy the social outings, though one parent reported a rude phone call when trying to book a tour. It is licensed by the California Department of Social Services as an Adult Day Program for up to 18 participants.

The Partial Work Program offers clubs such as cooking, music, fitness, art, photography, drama, improv, hiking, technology, community garden, interview skills, Spanish, budgeting and sign language, which change seasonally with client interest. It balances on-site programming with off-site community outings and accepts ambulatory and non-ambulatory clients who can follow directions, communicate their needs and manage their own bathroom needs. ICAN also runs weekend social events, camps and a coffee cart and store where clients work.

ICAN Torrance is at 2375 Sepulveda Blvd, Torrance, CA 90501, with parking in the lot off Vine. The Partial Work Program runs Monday through Friday with an AM session (8:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m.) and a PM session (2:00–6:00 p.m.), full or part time.
