Open Door is a Columbus nonprofit that supports people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live, create, work and belong in the community, and its Adult Day Services are built around each person's interests and goals. Participants can choose among several day options: the Open Door Art Studio & Gallery, Open Door Stage & Screen for acting, improv and production, and Career, Activity, & Community, which mixes on-site spaces with small-group community outings. Open Door also runs residential services, including supported community living and intermediate care facilities, and the Mirolo Sensory Park. Reviewers describe compassionate, knowledgeable staff, and one praises the new Mirolo Sensory Park; another recalls a community fishing outing at Griggs Reservoir. Eligibility is based on having an intellectual or developmental disability and being connected to, or eligible for, services through a county board of developmental disabilities.
Services & Care
The Career, Activity, & Community program includes the AccessABLE Community Garden, a teaching kitchen (Cooks in the Kitchen), a Creative Corner for arts and crafts, the Inspiration Station for games, recreation and skill-building, the Oasis Café for quieter time, and TouchPoint, a sensory room using light, sound and movement. Through On-the-Go experiences, small groups spend the day in the community at parks, museums, restaurants, libraries, shops, events and volunteer sites. The Art Studio & Gallery and Stage & Screen offer creative work, rehearsals, recorded projects and public performances, and for people interested in employment, Open Door in Union County offers hands-on work experience.
