SEEDs for Autism is a Phoenix nonprofit that offers adults on the autism spectrum a path from "learning to earning" through education, vocational training and social development. Its job development program for young adults 17 and older teaches vocational skills while members keep practicing life and social skills, with individual goals and work alongside staff and professional artists. Members rotate through several departments each day and make handcrafted products sold on site, online and at the Garden of Treasures gift and thrift boutique. SEEDs says it is not a DDD-contracted Day Treatment for Adults (DTA) and not a behavioral program; it is private pay with low tuition and is a vendor for Arizona Vocational Rehabilitation and Empowerment Scholarship Accounts. Families and professionals in reviews describe growth in confidence, independence and real-world skills.
Services & Care
Each day begins with a team meeting, after which members work in two or three departments, gaining experience in each medium through role play, hands-on training and real-life experience. Social skills and computer skills classes are taught in small groups. SEEDs also runs Social Saturdays and summer sessions for teens and adults 14 and older. It does not provide transportation, but staff help families with transportation options.
